Born in 1852, Paul TAVERNIER was a pupil of the great official painter of the time, Alexandre Cabanel.

From this academic training, Tavernier acquired excellent drawing skills.

As early as 1876, he exhibited at the Salon des artistes français.

In 1879, Paul Tavernier moved to Barbizon, near Fontainebleau, and became an important member of this school particularly in his depiction of horses.

A member of the Société des artistes français in 1883, he was asked to help decorate the grand hall at the Golf Club in Fontainebleau.

He also painted a large picture for the Théâtre de Fontainebleau depicting Louis XV hunting.

In 1900, Paul Tavernier was awarded the bronze medal at the Paris Universal Exhibition for his painting "Chasse à Courre".

In 1901, Paul Tavernier founded the Société des Courses de Fontainebleau.

Tavernier died in Fontainebleau in 1943, and the town pays  tribute to him by naming one of its streets after him.

Our painting: This is a large-scale hunting scene. The artist's palette of greens, browns and russets is superb. Paul Tavernier excels in the depiction of animals, skillfully rendering their postures and lively movements.
