Console in carved and gilded wood Louis XV period

Work in carved and leaf-gilded basswood, Pyrenees marble

Dimensions : Width 145cm, Depth 70cm, Height 84cm

This superb console with imposing dimensions is perfectly balanced. It is a Rocaille work, executed in the middle of the 18th century, with an ornamentation of scrolls and plant elements. The sculpture is very abundant, vigorous and precise, whether on the four feet, the front belt and the sides.

During the full reign of Louis XV, the curves were generous and the volumes powerful. The ornaments allow for asymmetry, and the numerous openwork parts reinforce the impression of fluidity. This piece is a high-level example.

The absence of a spacer is falsely synonymous with a systematically Provençal attribution. Many carved wooden consoles without spacers were made in Paris, and this is certainly the case with this piece. Rather than the shape of the model, we must focus on the quality of execution of the sculpture, the profusion of ornaments, and the care given to the line of the furniture. Here, the structure is designed so that the three-quarter view is as beautiful as the front view, with sides that flare out generously, and an elegantly animated facade. The feet end in brackets that give the impression that the console is floating, barely touching the ground. The carpenter's will is entirely focused on lightness and grace.

This piece has retained its very beautiful original marble, richly shaded with brown, ocher, red and gray. It is a rare marble, undoubtedly coming from the Pyrenees. It also retains much of its original gilding, which has of course been restored, but is in quite exceptional condition. This console has been restored according to the rules of the art.
